SWFF is Back!

It’s time!  Something Wicked Film Festival is coming back in 2020 for our 5th Anniversary and we’ve got a lot of great things in store for this very special year.  In addition to the wonderful new poster from our graphic designer Byron C. Erwin (who has designed all five of our festival posters) we will be making a lot of changes for our event which will be August 7-9, 2020.  We will be at a new venue for this iteration of the festival.  The 2020 festival will be held at the Infinite Energy Center where we will have three screening rooms and one panel discussion room, so that means more films to be screened!

We have also added Fan Films to our list of screening genres so you film-makers out there with fan film shorts and web series please make sure to submit those this year.  These fan films can be virtually of anything as long as it is a fan film of an established property.

You’ll also see us at many different conventions this year!  We were just at Walker Stalker Atlanta promoting both the film festival and our all-female live riffing show “That’s What She RIFFED” (which is once a month and if you’ve not had a chance to see this make sure to check that out as well).  We will have pictures from the event posted soon!

Submissions for the 2020 event start this November 15th through Film Freeway (https://filmfreeway.com/somethingwickedfilmfestival) and we look forward to seeing what you all have been working on the in the last year!

2019 AWARD WINNERS!

Here at Something Wicked Film Festival we have three different types of awards to represent different ideas of what an “award winning film” can be.  Our film festival represents the very best in student, amateur, semi-professional, and professional film-makers.  It is our idea that a film festival should represent the growing talents and achievements of film-makers from all disciplines especially the student and amateur as they are the ones with the least amount of representation at film festivals.  We also believe that the film festival is a place where these young film-makers can see their work represented in front of an audience and they can get feedback on their material.  Without the added benefit of feedback and networking (in any art form and not just film) we can’t grow and evolve as artists.

So, with our film festival we have our Main Awards which are chosen by our Festival Judge, Philip Wray, and his Jury Members (made up of over ten people in the industry) who decide on the winners.  Awards in this category include – Best Experimental Short Film, Best Horror Short Film, Best Direction of a Feature Film, Best Feature Film, Best Female Actor in a Short Film, etc. among many others.  These are presented to the film-makers on Sunday during the Awards Ceremony.

For our Festival Director Awards, my staff and I choose the winners of some of the more “fun” categories such as Goriest Film, Scariest Film, Scream Queen of the Year, and Bad Ass of the Year, among many others.  These are presented on Friday, August 2nd throughout the day and given mention during my Opening Night speech.  These are especially interesting because they acknowledge both shorts and features and allows some films to be signaled out for a specifically great technical achievement of some type.

Out last type of award is the Audience Choice Award which is revealed one week after the film festival after all ballots have been collected and tallied.  These winners are chosen by You, the Audience, so anyone can when these which makes them especially interesting for film-makers.

Below is our list of 2019 Main Award and Festival Award Winners (Audience Choice will be revealed later)!  We congratulate all film-makers for a job well done and we hope you all continue to grow as film-makers and that your films have a successful festival run and we look forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Poster Art from the 2018 SWFF!

This year for Something Wicked Film Festival (www.somethingwickedfilmfestival.com) we have some amazing posters on display for some of the unique shorts and features being presented.  Some of the best posters of this year come from the short films many of which are dynamic and inventive.  It’s very important for film-makers to craft a compelling poster because it’s the number one key art for their film that will draw in potential viewers among all the other options available.

A unique and dynamic poster cannot be stressed enough!  When the poster is the most important aspect of the marketing of your film, it pays to take your time to craft the very best.  This year, I wanted to point out some of my favorites of this year’s event.  In some cases, the poster is better than the actual film by overall all of these film-makers crafted some compelling artwork that drew me in and made me want to know more about their films.

Enjoy this small sampling and remember to come out to Something Wicked FF this August 3-5 and check out not only an amazing selection of films but also some of the great poster artwork which will be on display at the event.  Tickets on sale now at Ticket Source – www.ticketsource.us/something-wicked-film-festival

The FIRST SOMETHING WICKED FILM FESTIVAL!

Before we get into some amazing things for the new year (2018) I'd like to go back to the year where it all started in 2016 - the first year of our festival.  2016 was a good year for us as it was the first time stepping from behind the shadow of our previous festival Gwinnett Center International Film Festival (2013-2015), which focused on mainstream and non-genre films, and into the wide world of genre independent film making!

I decided that if I wanted to continue being a part of the film festival culture that I needed to take a step back and re-evaluate what I wanted to do as a film festival entity.  I knew I wanted to have a more focused group of films that appealed to a specific audience hence our focus on animation, fantasy, horror, and science fiction
films.

Although small, our first year had a huge variety of films for our audience such as the Halloween and monster filled feature All Hallow's Evil: Lord of the Harvest (Director's Cut), which opened
the festival and was written & directed by Ron McLellen!  We were also lucky enough to screen the horror features The Hike and Bigfoot: The Curse of Blood Mountain (from Georgia native Chris Simoes), among many others.  Some of my favorite features were the zombie film Peelers and the fantasy The Village of Middlevale.

On the shorts front we screened a huge variety of films (way to many to name here) but some of my favorites were Bubble, Earworm, Little Boy Blue, Awakenings, Mr. Dentonn, Legend of the Dark Rider and the web series Clown Versus Monkey (from Georgia native Sam Drog).  There were just so many films to choose from in such a short amount of time to watch them all.  I was lucky enough to have seen all the films screened but a truly remarkable aspect of the first year was the amount of filmmakers that came out in support of their films and indie film making in general.

We also had many special guests at the event including Sonya Thompson and Larry Mainland of AMC's The Walking Dead in addition to actress Lynn McArthur!  This was just a great first year to celebrate everything indie film!

On Sunday, to end the weekend off with a bang we had our Awards Ceremony in which we gave out awards to the best of the best indie films screened during the weekend.  This included our regular Festival Awards but also our Festival Director's Awards (revealed on Friday night after the Opening Night Screening).  Our first year ended as a success as we helped showcase some amazing fil
ms from all over the world for Georgia audiences and film-makers got the chance to network with one another and have a good time.

YEAR ONE ended! On to Year Two!
